Light Up Your Workplace, Improve Your Posture!

Do you suffer from dry eyes, neck and shoulder pain from long hours at the computer? Good posture is key to spinal health, but it's easy to let your head tilt forward unconsciously as the day goes on. In addition to good posture, a dark environment or glare from windows can have you hunching over your screen, leading to tension, headaches, and neck pain.

Therefore, proper lighting is one of the essential factors in maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, allowing employees to work comfortably and efficiently.

Many people have the same problem of adapting their bodies to their environment. Particularly in Grade A commercial buildings, the floor-to-ceiling glass design provides a beautiful view but sometimes causes reflections due to the glare from outside.

Often employees change their working posture to avoid reflections, thinking that this will improve their eye discomfort, but it can affect the health of their spine. Proper lighting depends on a number of factors, including lighting intensity, contrast dimming, distribution of light and the stability of the light. Normal office desk illumination should be between 300-500 lux, so if there is insufficient light on the computer display, desk lamps or other supplementary lighting should be used. When setting up your workstation, avoid placing your computer screen under lighting or near a window to avoid reflections or glare that may cause discomfort to your eyes.

Light sources and windows should be at right angles to the computer screen, and curtains should be used to block out excessive sunlight, or blinds can be installed to control the distribution of light.

In addition to adjusting the ambient lighting in your workplace, you should also optimise the display settings of your computer screen. Tweak the brightness, contrast, and font sizes to reduce glare and eye strain. These subtle yet impactful tweaks can help alleviate neck pain and prevent musculoskeletal disorders caused by constant craning over a screen. Furthermore, taking regular hourly breaks to stretch and relieve tension in your shoulders and neck is vital to sustaining productivity and wellness.

If the pain persists, seek medical assistance as soon as possible.
