Sip Your Way to Colorectal Cancer?
Colorectal cancer is on the rise, especially among young people. It's not just genetics, smoking, alcohol, or red meat. Studies show a correlation between sugary drink consumption and colorectal cancer risk. A 40-year-old Taiwanese woman without any other conventional risk factors developed stage 4 colorectal cancer from drinking just 1-2 sugary drinks per day.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s latest findings reveal that regular consumption of sugary drinks increases the risk of death from colorectal and kidney cancers, regardless of body weight.
According to the CDC, which analysed various data on 934,777 healthy men and women from 1982 to 2016, including information on how much sugary and artificially sweetened beverages they consumed, 135,093 of the study participants died of cancer by 2016. The study shows a correlation between sugary drink consumption and colorectal and kidney cancer mortality.
Studies show that drinking more than two sugary drinks a day increases the risk of obesity-related cancers, including colorectal and kidney cancers. Sweets have a major impact on insulin and obesity, as sugary drinks raise blood sugar and insulin, leading to insulin resistance and genetic expression changes, resulting in abnormal cell differentiation and the development of colon polyps, which can become cancerous.
Did you know that cell mutation is even more common in children aged 13-18 during their adolescent years? Just one 240c.c. sugary drink a day increases the risk of colon cancer by 32% by the age of 50 as the cells are undergoing accelerated differentiation during this period and sugar can greatly affect their transformation!
To protect our health, it's important to reduce our sugar intake, even if we can't cut it out completely. Start by reducing the sweetness we're used to, such as switching from full sugar to half sugar, or half sugar to quarter sugar. Gradually, our bodies will adjust to the reduced sweetness, reducing the risk of cancers and other diseases caused by sugar.
If you often drink sugary drinks and have symptoms of colorectal cancer, it is recommended to consult a doctor as soon as possible!
