What is Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is a cancerous disease caused by abnormal cell growth in the colon or rectum. Cancer cells can continue to grow, gradually spread and metastasize to other parts of the body.
Colorectal cancer is a common cancer in Hong Kong and is the second most common type of cancer in men in terms of new cases. As older people have higher chances of developing colorectal cancer, people who are over 50 years of age need to pay special attention to the issue.

Causes of Colorectal Cancer

Some high-risk factors for colorectal cancer include:

  • Diet with high animal fat and low fiber intake (such as fruits and vegetables)
  • Lack of exercise
  • Member/s of the family suffered from colorectal cancer or hereditary bowel disease
  • Chronic inflammation of the colon (also known as ulcerative colitis)

Cancer Ranking

According to the statistics provided by the Department of Health, colorectal cancer is currently the most common cancer in Hong Kong. The disease has also become the second most common cause of cancer mortality in Hong Kong.

Colorectal Cancer Mortality

In 2016, there were more than 2,000 deaths from colorectal cancer, equivalent to 15% of all local cancer death cases.

Reduce Mortality

Doctors have now confirmed that colonoscopy can help reduce the mortality of colorectal cancer.

Early Identification

As colorectal cancer shows no obvious symptoms during the early stage, the disease can easily be ignored. When symptoms have appeared, the risk of death can increase significantly. Hence, early identification and diagnosis is an important step in dealing with colorectal cancer.

Colorectal Cancer Screening Programme

The Department of Health (DH) are now fully implementing the Colorectal Cancer Screening Programme (CRCSP) start from 1st January,2020, further extending its coverage to Hong Kong residents aged 50 to 75, i.e. those born in the years 1944 to 1970, to enrol in screening tests subsidised by the Government for the prevention of colorectal cancer. Our Centre has participated in the "CRCSP" launched by the Department of Health in providing endoscopic examination to eligible citizens.
